GAME? IN INDONESIA, IT'S LIKE...

Game”, hearing this word, almost all of us will imagine a set of electronic things that consists of monitor, joystick, and of course a machine. Later, a lot of parents will imagine three words: bad, bad, and bad. In Indonesia, game represents the world of having fun, wasting time, and wasting money; particularly in a lot of parents’ mind. They will be angry if they find their son sitting in front of a computer in game-center, playing a game that costs Rp. 2000,- per hour. They will be angry if their son plays a game too much. They only want their son to study and study.

Why Indonesian people don’t trust in game? It because the negative stories about game is more than the positive ones. We often hears a child wasting a lot of money just for playing game, a man have to go to hospital because of too much playing game, and a lot of brain destructions by game. It’s true. Game in Indonesia is not popular in parents’ eye. Game is only for having fun, wasting time, and refreshing.

The problem is in the government. Indonesia government doesn’t think that game will be useful. In Korea, their government supports the game life, particularly in console and online games. They have a lot of games industries where a lot of people work. Korea, besides United States and Japan, is one of the most game-publisher in the world. Through game they can beat US in some genres. This is a vital industry in there. Almost online games that be played by a lot people in the world, including Indonesia, is come from Korea. Ragnarok Online, Rising Force Online, and Yulgang Online are the examples. Korea also give a consultant to parents and their child to build a communication between them if there is a problem when their child playing game too much. This is a good solution because the children often can’t tell their parents why they playing game.

The other problem is money. Almost all of parents think that game is just wasting money. Have they ever thought that we can get money from game? In Korea there is a job that called professional gamer. They are usually in contract with a corporation. In Korea there are many games competition. If they play there, they will bring a corporation name and they will be paid. Of course becomes professional gamer is not easy. They have to play game much to improve their skills, just like athletes. It’s not easy because they will need a lot of money to be a good player. Although some of them become professional gamers, they still have to get their parents’ agreement to continue playing games.

In Indonesia, this is a little difficult because we don’t have any tradition in games. Indonesian people have not yet known online games before 2002. Console like Playstation or Nintendo is only owned by mid-high level family. In general, it’s still difficult for Indonesia to become like Korea in game. The most important influence is from government. If Indonesia government thinks like Korea, maybe it’s not just a dream to see a lot of professional gamers from Indonesia.
